The Web turned 25 on March 12, 2014. On this occasion, Pew Research Center held a national survey in the USA that proves the impact of the internet on our everyday life. The results reflect the reality of today’s society.
Only 14% of American adults used the Internet in 1995. In 2014, they are 87%. Digital technology is now considered as essential. 53% of adults admit that the Internet would be “very hard or impossible to give up”.
Most users consider the internet as a good thing, for society (76%), and especially for them (90%). Almost four in ten adults admit that they need to have access to the internet.
Why do we love the internet so much? It strengthened relationships with our relatives
Most users believe that communicating online (through email, instant messaging or social networks) has strengthened their relationships with family and friends, not the opposite!
For example, members of the armed forces feel a higher satisfaction in their marriage and family when they are able to communicate frequently through video calls during deployment. It allows the military members to feel close to home.
The same observation can be made for international students. Staying connected online allows them to keep strong connections with their home countries. Besides, sharing their new experiences with their families allows the students to adapt to a new culture while guarantying an easy return home.
Last but not least, the Internet gives the elders the tools to stay in touch with their children and grandchildren. Once again, video calls promote the feeling of togetherness especially between grandchildren and grandparents.
